What is PSD2? Enacted by the European Union in 2015, the Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) lists specific security measures that financial institutions and third-party payment providers need to comply with under the law.
The goal: common and secure communication between all parties involved, for a safer digital world.
PSD2 Regulatory Technical Standards recommend that financial businesses utilize both Qualified Website Authentication Certificates (QWACs) and Qualified Electronic Seals (QSealCs) to make sure that all transactions take place over secured channels and ensure authenticity and integrity of the data.
Qualified Web Authentication Certificates:
Allow PSPs to identify themselves to financial institutions
Enable secure encryption for communications between all parties, for maximum confidentiality, authentication, and integrity
Use SSL/TLS certificates to protect data in transit between server and client, assuring that all data came from the Payment Service Provider (PSP) identified in the certificate
