Trend Micro offers a wide range of computer and network security products to meet our vision “A world safe for exchanging digital information .” Especially, regarding to anti-virus software, Trend Micro has top market share in the enterprise market worldwide and in Japan has leading market share for both the home user and enterprise markets as of July 2010.

For the home user, Trend Micro released improved anti-virus software which uses cloud-based technology to effectively detect viruses on a computer. EV SSL was introduced and incorporated onto the website that was offering this new anti-virus software.

Q: Why did you choose EV SSL to secure your website?

In order to improve conversion rates of our online stores, Trend Micro incorporated many improvements including the modification of our website content. However, many customers feel uncomfortable using the internet to submit personal information such as their name, address, and credit card information. Therefore, we believed it was essential to increase the trust of our website in order to improve our conversion rates.

Although standard-level SSL enables server-to-server encryption, it is hard to visually demonstrate to potential customers that the site is trustworthy because there is not a clear message. On the other hand, EV SSL activates a very visible green address bar on the browser providing a sign of trust to potential customers.

Q: Did you experience any changes after implementing GlobalSign EV SSL?

By introducing GlobalSign’s EV SSL and Site Seal on the website, our conversion rates dramatically improved. To tell the truth, the conversion rate increased by 8% on the webpage where we displayed the site seal compared to no site seal. We conducted A-B testing and found that placing the site seal in two locations; one on the top of the order form and another near the input fields of personal information, was the most effective implementation to improve the results.

Due to switching SSL providers, we worried about the possibility of a negative impact towards our conversion rate due to changing the site seal, but it did not affect our sales at all.

Q: Why did you choose GlobalSign?

Trend Micro not only has an anti-virus online store but also a worldwide enterprise product website. Until now, individuals in charge of Trend Micro’s regional websites were ordering SSL Certificates from any SSL vendor without any requirements. According to a new policy that was recently rolled out worldwide, we now set specific requirements when choosing a SSL vendor. Based on the requirements, GlobalSign was the top qualified vendor due to the fact that GlobalSign has offices worldwide and provides global support with high quality levels.

Although we had SSL Certificates issued from other CA vendors, we were happy to switch to GlobalSign using GlobalSign’s trade-in program which allowed us to transfer any remaining time on our certificates to the new GlobalSign SSL Certificates.

Q: Do you have any comments in regards to GlobalSign's service?

Trend Micro is using GlobalSign’s “Managed-SSL Service” which allows us to pre-vet organization information in advance, enabling us to issue certificates immediately whenever we require a SSL Certificate. We were using a similar solution with our previous CA provider and found that their issuance speed was occasionally slow due to their system structure; however GlobalSign’s system provides real-time issuance.

In addition, GlobalSign’s Managed-SSL service enabled us to eliminate various administrative task that were required by the other vendors. We are currently using both EV SSL and OrganizationSSL depending on the contents of the website. GlobalSign does not require different CSRs for each certificate and due to its unlimited-licensing policy we can easily add additional servers for back-up without additional expenses.
